Curated in collaboration with over 50 international partners including institutions, record labels, festivals and industry experts across fifteen countries – among which the Museum of Youth Culture, the Swiss Museum & Center for Electronic Music Instruments and Berlin’s Museum of Musical Instruments, to name a few – Music, Makers & Machines is the online permanent collection hosted on the Google Arts & Culture platform that celebrates the cultural impact of electronic music worldwide.

The digital collection includes augmented reality features, over 13,000 archival photos and videos, editorial features, more than 250 online exhibitions, 10.000 scans of Phatmedia’s rave flyers, 360° tours and 3D scans.

From the very birth of the synthesizer in 1895 to the explosion of nightlife culture, the exhibition narrates the songs and artists that made the history of electronic music and explores their influence on other music genres.


Music, Makers & Machines also engages virtual visitors in an interactive experience that turns their device in an electronic music studio with 3D and augmented reality.

Launch the AR Synth app on your device to create your own beats by playing five iconic synthesizers from the collection of the Swiss Museum for Electronic Music Instruments (SMEM), explore sounds and instruments that shaped the genre, meet the innovators and enter legendary recording studios, all with with a touch of a button : the history of electronica is at your fingertips!
