Beastie Boys’ Archive becomes an exhibit in LA

Staging rare memorabilia from the Mike D and Ad-Rock archives, the most comprehensive survey of the iconic New York trio has just opened at the city’s street art gallery BEYOND THE STREETS.

Opened in L.A. at BEYOND THE STREETS & CONTROL Gallery on December 10th 2022, EXHIBIT, the latest exhibition covering the career of the Beastie Boys, is the world’s most comprehensive survey of the iconic New York trio.

Announced in partnership with Goldenvoice, the exhibition traces the group’s forty-year history through memorabilia, ephemera, artifacts and personal items, most of which have never been displayed to the public.

EXHIBIT will lead visitors in a comprehensive journey of Beastie Boys’ world and aesthetic, from their earliest recordings to releasing seven multi-platinum albums. Included are the group’s rap debut of Licensed To Ill, the sample masterpiece Paul’s Boutique, the inimitable DIY approach of Check Your Head & Ill Communication, the Grammy-winning Hello Nasty, the all-instrumental stylings of The Mix-Up, to the love letter to New York that is To the 5 Boroughs and their last offering, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.

The story of punk rock, hip-hop, skateboarding and graffiti wouldn’t be complete without a chapter on Beastie Boys and the inedible mark they made on a movement that harmoniously merged the worlds of music and youth culture into a soundscape and experience all of its own.

Roger Gastman – curator

“The story of punk rock, hip-hop, skateboarding and graffiti wouldn’t be complete without a chapter on Beastie Boys and the indelible mark they made on a movement that harmoniously merged the worlds of music and youth culture into a soundscape and experience all of its own” said graffiti historian, urban anthropologist, collector and BEYOND THE STREETS founder & curator Roger Gastman.

The exhibition – curated by Gatsman, with Michael Delahaut and Tim Conlon – showcases and narrates Beastie Boys’ legacy through a collection of rare memorabilia, such as notebooks encapsulating lyrical concepts, early records and cassettes, posters, prints, stage passes, clothing items and more.

As recounted by Gatsman to the The Hollywood Reporter, on visiting Diamond and Horovitz he, “went over to their houses and did a handwritten inventory”. Then, over the course of months, he worked with the band and their management to sort through the items and curate the show.

“Not only are we honored to be a part of Beyond The Streets we’re happy that someone besides us appreciates all the weird shit we’ve collected, and made music on for the past forty years that will be on display.
